Source: Greencastle Star Press 16 July 1892 p 1

Ex-Senator Newton Booth died of cancer on July 14 at Sacramento, Cal after a long illness. Deceased was a brother of Mrs. Ames of this city and was a frequent visitor here.  Senator Booth was born at Salem, Ind in 1825 and graduated from Arbury (?) University in 1846. He held many positions of honor – was governor of California; US Senator from California; nominated for Vice President in 1876 by the Greenback party to run on the ticket with Peter Coop but declined to accept the race. The deceased was a polished gentleman, kind of heart and sympathized with the unfortunate. His death will be widely mourned. - kbz
